Panel Borders

I've been listening to this fantastic UK podcast all day. I was originally researching one of my favourite illustrators, Shaun Tan, when I stumbled upon an interview he had done with Panel Borders. Panel Borders is the podcast version of the radio show Strip! which is broadcast on Resonance FM in London. This show has interviewed a ton of prominent artists in the comic world and it is completely engrossing.

Check out their blog here. I've been listening to a ton of episodes here.

Textile Type

I love it when geometric and organic designs are combined in exciting and beautiful new ways. This super awesome type by Montreal designer Tania Alvarez was inspired by the way summer dresses are draped around the body in the wind.

Monday Mix #14: Squawking like a pinkmonkeybird

Autumn is here. I can't fight it any more.

BAND OF HORSES
Today I mourn summer.
THE DRUMS
This video must have been exhausting to film.
PASSION PIT
Discovered this band yesterday while traversing the blogosphere and am quite liking their stuff. Kind of MGMTesque.
ARCADE FIRE
Wake Up
Love this song and its use in the Where the Wild Things Are trailer. So pumped! (Also check out this live version with Bowie!)
DAVID BOWIE
Moonage Daydream
Speaking of Bowie....

Jen Gotch

Stumbled upon the b-e-a-utiful flickr photostream of photographer Jen Gotch the other morning. Such gorgeous and simple photography. So dreamy. Check out her flickr here and her website here (be sure to check out her fun links. Love the illustrations on her site).

David Galletly

Read about this amazing illustrator on Design for Mankind the other day and I am in love with the patterning and whimsy in his drawings. Check out more of his work on his blog here.

French toast at 10 at night?

Good good.

Roll Swap

I love the idea of a film swap. Shooting a roll then trading with another photographer who then reshoots that same roll. I found this cool film swap here while meandering through flickrland. I love it when film is cross-processed.

Monday Mix #13: I like you so much better, Kevin Bacon.

I was going to go meet some friends at the art museum this morning but they decided to go next week instead so now I have two hours of free time! Yay!

The last few days of summer are here and I am clinging onto them for dear life. Hear are some colourful flowers and some catchy tunes to brighten up your Monday morning.

(I'm sorry that this writing is so miniscule. When I mess with the fonts and colours like this Blogger seems to have a mind of it's own. Gah.)

THE NEW PORNOGRAPHERS
So catchy.
VAN MORRISON
I've had a vague idea of the chorus of this song stuck in my head for the past week but couldn't figure out what it was and then I turned on the Peak one morning and BAM! The answer to all my problems....or at least this one.
IDA MARIA
This song makes me laugh. Especially since I read the comments below the video and someone likes to sing it as "I like you so much better Kevin Bacon".
HALL & OATES
I'm pretty sure this was in Zoolander (which I watched the other day) but whenever I hear it I just think of the dance sequence in 500 Days of Summer.
CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL
They played this song on the radio this morning as I was waking up. It always makes my day to hear CCR in the morning.

Sunday morning eye candy

Stumbled upon this lovely flickr photostream this morning while I was looking for some imagery for a project.

Yellowshed Studio

While looking for some inspiration for a book illustration project today I suddenly remembered this amazing end credit animation from A Series of Unfortunate Events. The end credits were done by Yellowshed, a collaboration between Soyeon Kim and Todd Hemker. Be sure to check out their website to see more of their amazing work.

Virginia Kraljevic

I found Virginia Kraljevic on mint the other day. I love the intricate, whimsical patterning in her work (which is definitely lost at this small scale). Check out more of her work at full scale on her website here.

Scarlet Dragonchild

What's this? A post before noon? What a treat. Morning class was cancelled today woohoo!

My friend Chelsey introduced me to the work of Scarlet Dragonchild on deviantart the other night. She's an Indonesian illustrator who works mainly in watercolour and I absolutely adore the surreal landscapes and rich colours in her work! I couldn't find any website information but you can check out her deviantart gallery here.

It was a beautiful afternoon to visit the farmer's market today.

Moscow Metro

How gorgeous are the metro stations in Moscow? My dad tipped me off to these over the weekend. Why can't all subway stations look like this?

There's a cool virtual tour here that is definitely worth checking out.

Pancakes + muffins = Puffins!

Ok, just let me say this up front: I am a pancake snob. I have been spoiled my entire life by my father who makes the most amazing pancakes from scratch served with real maple syrup from Quebec (oh yeah, the good stuff). So, needless to say, I am very difficult to please when it comes to pancakes.

Now that that's out of the way, let me say that I have found THE solution for a quick grab and go breakfast: puffins! Bakerella posted these babies on her blog last week and I decided to give them a try this morning since I didn't have class until noon.

I didn't have any chocolate chips (although I'm not really a fan of chocolate chip pancakes and probably would have omitted these even if I had any on hand) and I don't have a mini muffin pan so they are regular sized and plain. But that did not hinder their goodness! The fluffiness and taste of buttermilk pancakes in the shape of a muffin! Genius.

Recipe Notes: Some blueberries and lemon zest would probably be a nice addition if you want to get fancy. I had to add a couple extra splashes of buttermilk when I was mixing it up because the batter was a bit on the dry side. Baked 15 - 20 minutes to compensate for larger size of muffins. Yield 6 regular size muffins.

Monday Mix #12: Gaga and Glads

A few snippets of music of stuff I've been jamming to this week. Mostly stuff I'm excited for that is being released tomorrow!

(Above picture is some lovely glads I picked up from the farmer's market last Wednesday)

LADY GAGA
I thought Lady Gaga was pretty much your run-of-the-mill pumped out by the record companies pop star and then Liz played me this version of her song and it made me respect her a bit more. (Plus you can actually understand what she is saying). I also like her rendition of Viva la Vida. Although, after the VMAs last night, she kind of scares the bajeezus out of me.
METRIC
Metric can do no wrong.
THE WHITE STRIPES
Saw a trailer for It Might Get Loud yesterday when I went to go see Inglorious Basterds (which was awesome). IMGL features Jack White, Jimmy Page and The Edge. Definitely on my must-see list.
MUSE
TOMORROW!
PETE YORN & SCARLETT JOHANSSON
Also Tomorrow!

Sunday walk

Went for a walk this afternoon.
They were having Kite Fest down by the lake.

A lot of the trees by the lake are still considerably greener than the one outside my window. Except this one.

Going to see Inglorious Basterds tonight.

Bon Voyage

Our first assignment for my illustration class was to create a pop-up greeting card. I designed a Bon Voyage card that looks like an old suitcase on the outside and when you open it up there's a map. Some clouds and an airplane pop-up. Pop-up cards are infuriating to put together (and mine only had a very simple mechanism in it).

I have been slaving away over this card for the past few days. Ok, that's a bit of an exaggeration because this project actually went a lot smoother than I was expecting and I am very happy with the result. It's pretty much a trifecta of three of my favourite things: vintage luggage, maps, and travel.

9

Went to go see 9 yesterday on the ultrascreen (3 stories tall, I believe). I thought the story was kind of lacking but the animation was so flippin' cool that I didn't mind as much. The mechanized beasties were so cool. Four out of five overall, I would say.

Do the math

Math + wit = good good

Here are a few of my favourite "math" blogs:

Indexed is always good at making fun of universal truths.

Graph Jam is full of infinite wit and wisdom.

New Math has a new equation every Monday. (via oh hello friend)
