GOOD GOOD LINKS FOR THE WEEKEND

Last night the 2012 Milwaukee Film Festival kicked off with its opening night film, Starbuck. I loved it and thoroughly encourage anyone to see it if they have the opportunity. Are any locals checking out any films this year? I'm pretty much going to be living at the movies for the next week. You can read my picks after the jump if you feel so inclined. Have a great weekend everyone!

Are you at a hipster wedding? (sooo many mason jars)

Jackson 5 meet Nirvana.

Maybe I'd ride my bike more if it had some polka dot stickers on it.

Incredible portraits by painter Andrew Salgado.

This toast plate. Is awesome.

I love Nick Alston's illustration for this month's theme on Silver Screen Society: Hook!

I'd be relatively sober after this Pinterest drinking game. Glad I got in the Pinterest game relatively early so to easier curate who I follow. (via village)

GILBERT FORD

I can't believe I didn't know about Gilbert Ford's work until earlier this week when his beautiful apartment was featured on Design*Sponge. So many great textures, wonderful line quality, and beautiful colour palettes. All that good stuff.

DOORS OPEN MILWAUKEE

On Sunday I had the chance to check out some of the events happening for Doors Open Milwaukee. Doors Open is an incredible event that happens each year where over one hundred buildings in the city allow the public to explore many spaces we wouldn't usually get to see—all completely free! Milwaukee is home to many historic buildings and I got to tour a couple that I've always wanted to see.

I made sure to line up early on Sunday morning to grab tickets to tour the Mitchell Building and go up the bell tower at City Hall. One of my favourite things to do in any city is to visit the high points and get a new perspective. The Pabst Theatre is one of my favourite things about Milwaukee (Rachmaninoff performed here!) and they had the entire theatre open to explore. Whether it was exploring below the stage in the green room or climbing up spiral staircases high into the rafters above the stage, nothing was off limits in the theatre. Here are a few behind the scenes pictures from the day. I  barely made a dent in the list of open buildings and can't wait to explore more next year!

BKLYN LARDER POSTERS

If you hadn't noticed, I tend to gravitate towards illustrations and designs that feature multiples of things. Collections. I dig 'em. So I loved this series of prints featured on Design Work Life last week. Beautifully designed by Franz Hueber for Bklyn Larder. That gelato print needs to be in my kitchen right now (it can hang out with this one).

GOOD GOOD LINKS FOR THE WEEKEND

Huzzah, the triumphant return of weekend links! Hope everyone has something fun planned. I'm going to scream my face off at Six Flags tomorrow and then check out some of the buildings at Doors Open Milwaukee on Sunday. Have a good one!

I Heart Guts.

I wonder what happens if you land on "Go to Jail" in this Life-size Monopoly in Chicago.

Beautiful embroidered illustrations.

Fantastically eerie flying house series.

I want to visit the shortest railway in the world.

Going to try making some of these this weekend.

Cathedral of Junk.

Life after finding the Higgs Boson.

Mumford & Sons on Q yesterday. (Who's excited for Tuesday?!)

CITY MUSEUM

Let me preface this by saying that no pictures and nothing I write can do justice to the magical wonderland that is City Museum. I pretty much spent the first fifteen minutes of my visit just walking around in awe and repeating, "This is the coolest place ever."

This was a must-visit on my recent trip to St. Louis. If you ever find yourself in St. Louis, please do yourself a favour and go here. It is a crazy jungle gym play place that looks like it is straight out of a children's storybook. Pretty much anything you could climb on or through, you can. There is a cave area with tunnels through the walls, a rainforest area with a sturdy wire mesh canopy to climb around on, a crazy outdoor play area with wire tunnels suspended fifty feet in the air to climb through, slides that are multiple stories tall and you have no idea where they might come out, as well as an entire rooftop area that was unfortunately closed when we were there because it was a tad drizzly out. You could easily visit here four or five times and still not explore every nook and cranny in this insane museum.

A little tip, make sure you wear good climbing clothes! Long pants to cover your knees and some comfy shoes are a must.

THE BENTO BESTIARY

This book caught my eye when I was browsing at Left Bank Books on my trip to St. Louis a little while ago. (And of course it came home with me). It is the latest incarnation of The Bento Bestiary produced by the fine folks at Nobrow. The book is full of clever descriptions by Scott Donaldson paired with fantastic illustrations by Ben Newman of some of the Yokai, an ancient race of Japanese demons.

Here's a short  video showing the printing process of the earlier edition of Bento Bestiary. I love watching printmaking in action.

BITS OF MY WEEKEND

Fell off the blogging wagon a bit last week because I haven't been spending as much time as usual surfing the interweb but I'm back this week! It'll be back to our regularly scheduled programming. I hope everyone had a great weekend. Mine was pretty laid back with a movie night on Saturday with some friends (Emperor's New Groove and Moulin Rouge make for a winning line-up) and some quality illustration hermit time yesterday. Made a batch of these chocolate chip cookies (my go-to recipe).
