DENISE HOLMES—14 DAYS OF LOVE

Denise has been working on a little illustration series over on her blog for the past fourteen days. Fourteen Days of Love kicked off at the beginning of February and she challenged herself to create one sketch a day of people or animals with hearts. Even the Valentine's Scrooge in me loves it. I like to call Denise the master of the simply adorable—her characters are just so darn cute. You can check out the entire series right here.

Had a fun weekend with friends. Melthouse, movies, and Apples to Apples with these kids. We had a mondo movie marathon that included Burn After Reading, Back to the Future, Beginners, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and a couple episodes of Freaks and Geeks. After the unusually warm winter we've been having, the frigid weather we had on Friday and Saturday was a bit of a shock. Had to go out on Saturday and was walking around with three layers of clothing on! How was your weekend?

You may or may not have noticed the absence of the Monday Mix around Good Good for the past few weeks. Starting this year, I thought I would condense these down into a monthly mix featuring some of the new songs I discovered, old favourites I had on repeat and other musical goodness pertaining to the month. Some of January's musical highlights included:

CRASH COURSE + THOUGHT BUBBLE = MADE OF AWESOME

I am a big fan of the vlogbrothers. Hank Green, founder of ecogeek.org and creator of 2D glasses (to name a few), and John Green, New York Times Bestselling author, created this youtube channel in 2007 and since then have built a huge following known as Nerdfighteria. They recently launched a new youtube channel called Crash Course where they will be sharing videos about biology and world history. I was understandably excited about this (it's learning made more awesome!) and that was even before I saw the fantastic infographics designed by the talented team at Thought Bubble for John's world history lessons. You can check out the first video about the Agricultural Revolution below. Can't wait to see more throughout the year!

How is your Monday going everyone? I found five bucks in my dress pocket and took it as a sign that today was going to be awesome. So far, so good.

Over the weekend, I went to the opening of Abstract Fiction with Colleen at UWM. The lovely Lisa Congdon, whose illustrations and other numerous projects I've admired for awhile now, was showing some of her work there and flew out from San Francisco for the opening! It was great to meet her and hear her speak about her art. Colleen and I hit up Melthouse Bistro afterwards (been there three times thus far and it has yet to disappoint). I got the Sergeant Pepper sandwich this time. Game night with friends on Saturday and Sunday was pretty much spent in illustration lockdown. How was your weekend?

How was your weekend? It was gorgeous out on Saturday and then yesterday night it was so icy I could barely walk! Had a rather productive Saturday packing and shipping some orders. Got some illustration work done and read through part of the latest Uppercase. Yesterday was a spent watching Disney movies and eating Chinese take-out with these girls.

I wanted to share a little bit of the non-Christmasy things I did while I was home for the holidays. I got my Christmas wish and it was a green vacation for me! Sure, it rained almost every day but I wasn't complaining. There were many ventures downtown including some time spent at my favourite place in Vancouver. Some walks in the woods (trees covered in moss, lichen, and ferns are my quintessential Pacific Northwest), and also tried out a couple of new (to me) restaurants: Burgoo and Cafe Deux Soleils (a Commercial Drive staple). We squeezed in a trip up to Whistler on my last day in town for some cross-country skiing.

After getting back to Milwaukee last week I decided to take an impromptu blogging break to recharge while I got back in the post-holiday swing of things. Thanks for hanging in there during the break and now back to our regularly scheduled programming!

I got to go home for Christmas which I haven't been to in a year! (The longest time I've spent away from home). Just wanted to share a bit of my holiday with you. I checked out the Vancouver Christmas Market, VanDusen Festival of Lights, watched the skaters at Robson Square, and had some chestnuts roasted on an open....cart. How was your holiday?

WINTER WARM-UP DRINK #3: MULLED APPLE CIDER

Mulled cider is the drink that really says winter to me. It is my ultimate warm-up drink. Here is a delicious apple version from Pioneer Woman. I think it would be great made with cranberry juice, too! (You could add a splash of rum to make a grown-up version).

CRAN-APPLE SAUCE

In an attempt to clean out my fridge before I leave later this week I whipped up a batch of this to use up the extra fruit I had. It's sort of a "wing it" recipe but it turned out great so I thought I would share.

CRAN-APPLE SAUCE
Makes 4 servings

• 1 bag cranberries
• 3 apples, peeled and sliced (I used honeycrisp)
• 1/4 cup brown sugar
• 3/4 cup spiced pear cider*
• Dash of cinnamon
• Pinch of nutmeg

Mix everything together in a pot and bring to a boil. Reduce temperature and simmer until the fruit has softened and the liquid has partially cooked off allowing your sauce to thicken (about a half hour). Enjoy!

*This just happened to be in my fridge (I buy mine at Trader Joe's) but pretty much any other liquid with a flavour that would jive with these fruits would work, too. Orange juice, apple juice, cranberry cider. You could even just use water and add some orange zest for extra flavour and a bit more sugar. This recipe is really forgiving.

WHITE CHOCOLATE BROWNIES, REDUX

Do you know what my number one post of all time is? It's not any of my illustrations, or perhaps a Friday link list. Not even a Monday Mix or post about a beloved illustrator. No, I will tell you what it is. It is these white chocolate brownies a la Moxie's that I made last year with over twice as many views as any other post!

I was trying to replicate a dessert from a local restaurant for my friend and apparently there are many, many other people looking to do the same.

I found another white chocolate brownie recipe recently and decided to see if I like the recipe better. Quite honestly, it has been too long for me to give an accurate comparison. But they were darn tasty! Here's the recipe if you would like to make your own:

WHITE CHOCOLATE BROWNIES A LA MOXIE'S, TAKE TWO
Recipe found on Tartlette

6 tablespoons unsalted butter
8 ounces white chocolate, chopped
2 eggs
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 tablespoon vanilla
1 cup flour
1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 350.
Grease and flour an 8 inch square baking pan, or line with parchment or foil.
Melt butter and 4 oz white chocolate in the top of a double boiler. When melted, remove from heat and add the rest of the white chocolate (I did it all at once and nothing bad happened). Stir until melted and set aside.
In a separate bowl, beat eggs and sugar until pale and thick. Add white chocolate and butter mixture, flour, and vanilla. Beat until just smooth. Add chocolate chips and stir until just combined.
Pour batter into prepared baking pan and bake for 35 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean. Cool on wire rack.

My coworker got this Romeo & Juliet counting book with great illustrations by Alison Oliver from her Secret Santa the other day and I am very envious. It is a colourful board book featuring cleverly selected numeric groups to highlight different moments from the story. I went to check up on Alison's website and there is a Pride & Prejudice one, too! Would fit perfectly in the stocking of any design nerd, no?

I was never really a fan of the John Tenniel illustrations for Alice in Wonderland (I think it was mostly the chunky neck that got to me). Now, these gorgeous illustrations by Leonard Weisgard I can get behind. There are few things in life that I like better than a beautifully illustrated vintage picturebook. These illustrations are from a 1949 edition of the book. I'm in love with all of the layered botanical details that make these illustrations so lush.

WINTER WARM-UP DRINK #1: CHAIDER

As the cold weather sets in, I find myself sitting down with a mug of something hot every night. I thought it would be fun to illustrate and share them on the blog with you over the next month.

First up: Chaider. It's a favourite of mine from Alterra in Milwaukee but also super easy to make yourself. Just mix some spiced apple cider and chai concentrate and microwave. Or microwave the cider and add a chai teabag to steep for a bit. Enjoy! (And if you need more, here's my illustrated hot toddy recipe from earlier this year).

Oh the wonders of not having to worry about homework and finals at this time of year. Frees up time on the weekend for things like Art vs Craft! It's been a couple of years since I've been to the annual Milwaukee holiday craft fair. For those not from the Milwaukee area, Art vs Craft was started eight years ago by local artist, gallery curator, and director of Handmade Nation Faythe Levine. Inspired by Renegade in Chicago, she wanted to bring a similar experience to Milwaukee. The event brings together creatives from all over the midwest and beyond for one day each holiday season and is a great opportunity to support small business and pick up some cool one-of-a-kind gifts. If you couldn't make it to the event on Saturday, I put together a quick recap of some of my favourite sellers:

Ex Libris Anonymous | Jacob Deatherage creates these one-of-a-kind sketchbooks from vintage repurposed books. I spent a bit of time on the weekend absolutely engrossed by the blog of Finnish illustrator Anna Emilia Laitinen. It is full of her beautiful watercolour work, process photos, as well as dreamy photos from her everyday life. I love how intricate, delicate, and botanically inspired her work is. She weaves these fantastical carpets of floral illustrations that are the kind of places you want to lie in all day and just stare at the sky. It is definitely a treat for the eyes.

SUSTAINABLE JEWELRY: OBJECT JEWELRY SALE

I attended the presale for the Object Jewelry Sale last night at the Irish Pub. The annual sale presented by the Jewelry and Metalsmithing students from the Art and Design Department at UWMilwaukee focuses on jewelry made from repurposed materials this year. It was fun walking around the sale and guessing what sort of materials had been upcycled to create some of the pieces. From the usual suspects like bottle caps and pop-tabs to more unusual materials like t-shirts in resin and shampoo bottles, there was a great variety of creative items to choose from!

If you live in the Milwaukee area I suggest stopping by. I picked up a pair of awesome earrings (last photo) made by Emily Klopstein that I wore to work today. More info on the sale here. It's happening at the UWM Union from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. The proceeds benefit Object, a student-run metals organization, in support of their efforts to bring in visiting artists.

I've been watching the BBC series Human Planet by getting the discs one at a time from Netflix. Have you seen it? (I'm currently on disc two!) It aired on Discovery Channel in April this year but I don't get that channel. Both the environments and the people are just incredible. From underwater hunting on one breath to building houses in the treetops, I find myself constantly marveling at the activities that are just the everyday norm for some of these people. The oceans episode is my favourite thus far. If you are ever having a lousy people day (we've all had them) I suggest watching it. Kind of restores your faith in humanity. (Bonus: there are narwhals!)

I saw this awesome video about one of my favourite artists on Poppytalk a little while ago. A short and sweet look into Rob Ryan's life and his thoughts about his art. If you are unfamiliar with Rob Ryan, you have probably seen his papercuts somewhere even if you didn't know they were his. They are incredibly intricate and often feature some typography integrated into the composition. I loved hearing him speak about the interconnected nature of his art.

Anna is a dear friend whose work continues to blow my mind and inspire me. I love her whimsical characters and airy use of media. Her work has always had a quirky sort of French quality to it that reminds me of Sylvain Chomet while still being very much her own style. I think that her background in animation brings so much life to her non-animated work and it is a quality that I have always envied. She is currently working on a graphic novel (among other things) and I am eagerly awaiting its completion. Until then, here is some of her other work to satiate my hunger. Hello hello, how was your weekend? The weather was fantastic in Milwaukee again and my weekend was jam-packed with fall activities. Friday we had a work field trip to Monches Farm which is a dreamy garden and gift shop to revel in the beautiful autumnal items on display there. (That third picture in the greenhouse was taken there. I'm pretty sure that is what heaven looks like). Portugal. The Man played at Turner Hall on Friday night and it was a really great show. Participated in the second annual Waukesha Zombie Walk on Saturday (there were double the amount of people as last year!) followed by dinner at Chili's still in full zombie attire. All in all, a very good weekend.
