KENNEDY SCHOOL
While in Portland last month, my sister and I spent a night at the Kennedy School. I read about this hotel on Design Sponge last year and thought it sounded totally rad. The building used to be an elementary school that opened in 1915. After having to close in 1975, the McMenamins group converted the space into a hotel while preserving many of the original school assets. It now features an in-house movie theatre, soaking pool, brewery, and several restaurants and bars. It was really cool to wander around the halls in the evening, looking at the kitschy art lining the walls and popping into the various bars and restaurants. Definitely recommended if you are visiting Portland!

The halls remind me so much of my high school, which was built in 1919. I think there must have been only one style of school at the time! What a cool repurpose for an old building, though. Now I really want to go check it out!
ReplyDeletevery cool sounding! not sure i've been to a place like it..
ReplyDeleteLove the history behind this - thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteSo now I know where I want to stay when I go to Portland someday.
ReplyDeleteThe K School is pretty amazing. I'm from Portland and LOVE the McMenamin's pubs! There is one in Oregon City, where I'm from, and we used to always go there on Saturday night :) Edgefield McMenamin's is amazing too. Lots of great concerts in the summer :)
