STATION ZERO

I can't believe this show has already come and gone at Light Grey Art Lab in Minneapolis! I meant to post about it earlier but better late than never I suppose. Station Zero featured a collection of redesigned vintage sci-fi covers. Here are a few of my favourites from the show and you can see the rest on their site right here. It looks like they still have prints available, as well.

ERUDITE ALPHABET

Alex Westgate created this fantastic alphabet book teaching parents and kids a bit about academia, craft, profession and bizarre pseudoscience. As far as I know, it currently does not have a publisher but you can see more of the artwork on his website.

 

SPACE RACE

The accordion book fun continues! I finally went to the post office over the weekend to pick up a package I had ordered from the wonderful Nobrow Press (one of the few companies where I mean it when I say "I want to buy all the things"). Space Race is a beautifully illustrated accordion book by Tom Clohosy Cole. FELICITA SALA

I have a thing for illustrated lists, especially of an alphabetical nature. These alphabet illustrations by Felicita Sala are boss. You can check out more of her work right here (I also particularly love her illustrated recipes, among other things). She also has a nifty blog.

IS IT SUMMER YET?

You may or may not know that aside from being an illustrator, I also work as an artist for Kohl's department store creating art for the home products. I don't usually share a lot of the stuff I've created for that over here but I wanted to share these kids' beach towels that I had fun creating art for since I figured they fall more in the illustration category than most of the other products I make.

SAKANA GA SUISUI

I picked up this amazing book at Mitsuwa market while I was in Illinois a couple of weekends ago. I always love admiring the Japanese children's book selection they have there but I literally have to judge the books by their covers because they are all wrapped in plastic! So it is always a bit of a crapshoot as to whether the inside illustrations will be just as appealing (although I haven't been let down yet!).

I guessed it would be good because it is a Tupera Tupera book, a fantastic Japanese design duo. I really had no idea just how much I would love it, though. This book was made for me. It features everything I love. Interesting textural/graphic illustrations of unusual sea creatures? Unconventional book size? Accordion fold structure with a beautiful cover sleeve? Sunfish?? Anglerfish?? Made for me, I tell you.

I cannot read it (or rather, I can read it from the hiragana that I have somehow retained from my childhood, I just don't understand it). The repeating syllables lead me to believe that they are some sort of noises?

I'll stop gushing about the book now and let you have a look at just how incredible it is. I have so many ideas for accordion fold narratives of my own swirling around my brain now.

BARCELONA, BRUGES, AND BOWIE!—HELP ME PLAN MY TRIP!

I'm going to meet my sister in Europe after she finishes her semester abroad this June and we'll be traveling around for three weeks. Starting in Copenhagen, ending in London and whatever happens in between is wide open right now! The only concrete plans are the start, the end, and Barcelona, Bruges, and this David Bowie exhibit. Above are a few of the cities we are planning on hitting up (as well as somewhere in the south of France—Marseille?). But like I said, anything is possible. Marrakesh? Madrid? Ireland? I already know I'm not even going to come close to seeing everything I want to and am just looking forward to whatever ends up happening. So what I'm asking you is:

What is your favourite place that you've visited in Europe?
This could be a city, a shop, a street, a view. Anything that you think is not to be missed.

Where should we stay?
Are there any hostels that you've stayed at in these cities that you would recommend? Or a neat hotel that won't completely break to bank? Can we stay on your couch?

How should we travel?
Any tips for transportation within cities or between countries?

Where should we eat?
The food. Ohhhh the food. How I am looking forward to this.
