HOLI FESTIVAL

Holi Festival is the Hindu festival of colour and has long been something I've wanted to experience. To celebrate the arrival of spring each year, Hindus will run through the streets throwing coloured powders at one another. This is a stunning video of the festivities. It's amazing how your perspective on something can change if you just slow things down.

SHIRATANI UNSUIKYO RAVINE

Yakushima is a gorgeous island south of Kyushu in Japan. It has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site and is the latest destination to be added to my lengthy "I want to go to there" list. I recently stumbled upon some photos taken by Josh Berglund a few years ago when he visited and was particularly enamoured with these gorgeous photos of the Shiratani Unsuikyo Ravine. The island is famous for its ancient cedars known as "sugi" and there are many great hiking trails around the ravine. You can see more photos right here.

Treehouse Restaurant

When I was younger, I always wanted a treehouse (I still do) but we never had any good treehouse trees in our yard. Today, I would love to just hang out in a treehouse and do my homework. How awesome is this treehouse restaurant in New Zealand? Why does everything cool come from New Zealand?

Mark my words, one day I will go to Japan. And when I do, Moerenuma Park is on my list of places to visit. This gorgeous park, located in Sapporo, used to literally be a dump. The current park was designed by sculptor Isamu Noguchi.

I want to go to there: Quiet villages in Norway

We were talking in my art history class today about suburbia and our teacher had us write down what we want our lives to be like in ten years. I felt like it was one of those things like when you are graduating from high school and maybe one of your old teachers kept something you wrote when you were young like "When I'm grown up I want to be an ice cream flavour inventor and live on the moon". My answer was I want to be traveling around the world and working as a freelance illustrator. I figured out this morning that if I could earn a living drawing buildings, flowers, food, and exciting faraway places for the rest of my life I would be happy.

Today I want to be in a quiet village in Norway under a big, clear sky.

I want to go to there: Atlantic Avenue Tunnel, NY

I learned about this very cool attraction over at Abbey Goes Design Scouting. The Atlantic Avenue Tunnel is the oldest subway tunnel in the world. Located in Brooklyn, the tunnel was built in 1844 and is a half-mile long. There are all sorts of stories about ghosts and other paranormal activities involving the tunnel and it even served as the inspiration for an HP Lovecraft short story! Nowadays, tours are offered and arts events are held in the tunnel.

I want to go to there: Chiang Mai Yi Peng Festival, Thailand

Sorry for the radio silence yesterday. A few posts lined up for you today. Got another crazy week ahead of me! Hope everyone had a fun Hallowe'en. Mine was spent watching scary movies and consuming mass amounts of junk food.

How incredible does this festival in Thailand look? Read about it over on Designverb. The Chiang Mai Yi Peng Festival is a Buddhist lantern festival that happens at the end of October/beginning of November. Thousands of sky lanterns (called Khom Fai) are released and are said to carry away the troubles of the person who launched them.

I want to go to there: Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta

This morning I am dreaming of Albuquerque (which I can finally spell! Too little, too late. It was the answer on the Most Misspelled Sporcle Answers quiz last week. Anyways...back to my point) Yesterday, Melanie from You Are My Fave posted about her trip to the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta and I am now plotting how I can get to New Mexico next year.

The force is strong with this one.

I want to go to there: Kizhi Island

Design Sponge ran a segment the other day about log cabins that featured the Church of the Transfiguration of Our Savior on Russia's Kizhi Island. Such cool architecture! Built in the early eighteenth century, the body of the church is constructed out of logs and topped with twenty-two onion domes. I'm a sucker for onion domes. The church is now a World Heritage Site.

(P.S. Is it just me or does anyone else think of
Minas Tirith when they look at this picture?)
